Scans for every stage of your pregnancy
Your doctor will tell you which scans you need and when. This is a guide to the scans we perform in each trimester.
First trimester
First trimester ultrasound
From week 5 or 6
Confirms the pregnancy and its location inside the uterus, the heartbeat, the number of babies and how many weeks along you are.
11 to 14 week ultrasound
Weeks 11 to 14
Reviews the baby’s early anatomy and the ultrasound markers for this stage, such as nuchal translucency and the nasal bone. Your doctor interprets them together with any other tests they order.
Second trimester
Anatomy scan
Weeks 18 to 24
A detailed review of the baby’s organs and structures: brain, heart, spine, abdomen and limbs, as well as the placenta and amniotic fluid. Takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Gender scan
Second trimester
If you wish, we will tell you whether it’s a girl or a boy. It can be done together with another scan or on its own; we will confirm the right week when you book.
Third trimester
Growth and well-being scan
Third trimester
Estimates the baby’s weight and growth and checks its position, the placenta and the amniotic fluid.
Obstetric Doppler
As indicated by your doctor
Measures blood flow in the umbilical cord, the baby and the uterus to assess how the baby is receiving oxygen and nutrients.
4D ultrasound: meet your baby
The 4D ultrasound shows your baby in three dimensions and in motion. It is a medical scan that you can also enjoy as a special moment with your family.
As a medical scan
It complements the assessment of the baby, for example the face and lips, and is performed and interpreted by the same certified radiologist.
As a family experience
See your baby’s face, expressions and movements with up to 2 companions, and take home digital images of your baby.
Best time: the clearest images are usually obtained between weeks 26 and 32, although it depends on the baby’s position.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I have an ultrasound?
From week 5 or 6 of pregnancy, when it is already possible to confirm the pregnancy inside the uterus and, in many cases, see the heartbeat.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
It is recommended, because it helps us focus the scan on what your doctor needs to know, but it is not required to book.
Can my partner or family come in?
Yes, up to 2 companions can come in with you.
Is ultrasound safe for my baby?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and it is the standard imaging test during pregnancy when performed by a health professional.

From the second trimester, depending on the week and the baby’s position. When you book, we will recommend the best time.
When will I get my results?
You receive your digital report, interpreted by the radiologist, the same day.
Do I need any preparation?
Most pregnancy scans need no preparation. In early pregnancy, the scan may be transvaginal (empty bladder) or transabdominal (full bladder); we will tell you which when you book.
