Venous and arterial Doppler ultrasound in Mérida

A radiation-free scan that shows how blood flows through your veins and arteries. To investigate varicose veins, leg swelling, poor circulation and the arteries of the neck.

Performed by: Dr. David Peba Ceballos, radiologist certified by the Mexican Council of Radiology and Imaging (specialty license no. 12855636)

Duration: 30 to 45 minutes, approximately, depending on the areas examined

Results: digital report the same day

Doctor’s referral: recommended, but not required

Preparation: comfortable clothing for limbs and neck; a 6-hour fast for abdominal Doppler (water and usual medications allowed)

Doppler studies we perform

Doppler measures the direction and speed of blood flow, which makes it possible to find blockages, clots or valves that do not close properly.

Leg venous Doppler

Varicose veins and venous insufficiency

Evaluates the veins and their valves to investigate varicose veins, swollen or heavy legs and to rule out thrombosis.

Signs to get checked

  • Varicose or visible veins, or legs that feel heavy and tired.
  • Swelling of the legs or ankles, especially at the end of the day.
  • Calf pain when walking that goes away with rest.
  • Wounds on the legs or feet that are slow to heal, especially if you have diabetes.
  • Your doctor’s recommendation due to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking or a history of vascular problems.

Important: if a leg suddenly swells with pain or redness, or if you have shortness of breath or chest pain, go to the emergency room right away.

Dr. Peba is certified as an Expert in Doppler Ultrasound by Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, Madrid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between venous and arterial Doppler?

Veins return blood to the heart; venous Doppler studies varicose veins, venous insufficiency and clots. Arteries carry blood to the tissues; arterial Doppler looks for narrowing or blockages that cause poor circulation.

Does it hurt?

No. It is an ultrasound with gel on the skin. In venous Doppler the leg is sometimes pressed gently to check the veins.

Do I need to fast?

Not for legs, arms or carotids; just wear comfortable clothing. Aorta, kidney and liver Doppler require a 6-hour fast; you may drink water and take your usual medications.

Is the study useful for varicose vein surgery or treatment?

Yes. Your vascular surgeon uses it to plan treatment. If you bring the referral, we focus the study on what they need.

When will I get my results?

You receive your digital report, interpreted by the radiologist, the same day.
