Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast?

For most abdominal scans, yes, because food and gas make it hard to see the gallbladder and pancreas. The fast is 6 hours; you may drink water and take your usual medications.

Does an abdominal ultrasound hurt?

No. Gel is applied to the skin and the probe is moved over it. If an area is tender, you may feel some pressure.

Ultrasound or CT scan?

Ultrasound is usually the first test for the abdomen because it is fast and uses no radiation. In some cases your doctor may later order a CT or MRI for more detail.

When should I go to the emergency room instead of booking?

If you have very severe abdominal pain or pain that is getting worse quickly, a high fever, vomiting that won’t stop, or bleeding, go to the emergency room right away.

When will I get my results?

You receive your digital report, interpreted by the radiologist, the same day.
